Why is it so difficult to find the right words?

Do you know that? The information is stored in different parts of the brain that are newly produced only through the process of thinking over and over again.

Why write thinking inspires

The ideal writing process is a fiction

Often the advice is an issue to think through thoroughly before you start writing.However, this is not realistic. Most of Durchblick comes only through the writing itself: For a comprehensive essay, I had to write at the beginning of my psychology studies, I had little time to familiarize myself with four theories.

Impossible to build an argument structure of the text, because I had not processed the complexity of the issue! By the time pressure, I had to start writing: So I copied all the notes in a “master document” and began to cluster the various theoretical modules to sense units. I printed the text often, these content blocks pushed back and forth until I had a structure found that seemed logical.

With each revision new questions came.There were eye-opening effects, knowledge was strengthened. I could identify vulnerabilities, and supplement details.

I puzzelte together a text image without knowing how the image should look. This groping in the dark was painful. I vowed: never again!

For always – be it in my thesis, when writing my first book, even with shorter texts – I never managed to be the just what school, university and counselors teach the ideal writing strategy: organize 1. thoughts and determine key messages and 2. this write off continuously. As much as I tried it, the amount of new information about calling me every time anew. Accordingly, I felt bad again … until I the best grade obtained for the essay!

Writing is an underrated learning medium

It is easier to express than to formulate this handy in a text talking a thought suggested. Only once you have done that, the idea is fully developed. The concrete effect is through writing exacerbated:

  • Who writes, takes time, energy and stamina. This forces to focus on important points.
  • We write more slowly than we talk and have more time for deep thinking.
  • Writing relieves the memory. Capacity is free to check the written down.
  • We can look at our thoughts distanced strengthen at important points or restructure.


The letter provides a mirror of their own thoughts. By comparing two knowledge representations – the internal structure of the head and the visible external knowledge structure – we can check whether what we wanted to express, with the matches what we have written.

So you use writing for learning

Do not forget afterwards to draw conclusions and to answer the question. I used this method many times when I was not getting anywhere in my doctorate. So I ( “What’s complexity in advertising?” | “How can one structure ranges”) voluntarily papers on specific issues written.

Back to the roots . I do not mean that you should resort to stone slab, hammer and chisel, but pen and paper are just better to think than the computer! On paper, you can arrange or draw ideas visually. This effect is enhanced by the mechanical movements when writing: handwriting is better than typing on the keyboard reminded because there each letter is encoded with a unique gesture.

Thought raid . The best ideas come in the most unusual situations: in the park, on the way back from sports or drink with friends. Unfortunately, one often forgets good thoughts as suddenly as they came. Be therefore always armed with a small notebook and pen!

The thoughts exploratory writing – as described here – has two nice side effects :

    • In the short term : often succeed in these writing sessions really good formulations and there are creative ideas that you can incorporate directly into the paper or exam.
    • In the long term : you practice writing. In studies we write too little and exercising this skill too little! As you write only for you, you can hide the perfectionism and express your thoughts in simple words. You’ll trained in dealing with the written word. So, people who regularly write diary, fewer inhibitions when writing.
