Unlike in the case of Administration or HRD resumes, the accounting resume has to be more specific to the point in commensurate with the goals of the prospective organisation or if the resume is made as a general one without specifying any organisation then it has to be on the possible out come of the specified qualification or experience one is in. For example in the case of a Cost Accountant he has to be specific on how effectively he will be in a position to monitor the cost aspects on a day to day basis.
As usual after entering the name and contact details on the top left hand corner of the first page, the objective heading has to be an eye catching one on the driest subjects on the earth that is the “accounting”. At the same time we have to accept that this is the most important subject for prosperity. So the employers are slightly weary of the background of the accounting experts who are seeking position in their organisation. The simple expression the “Resume” will certainly right because an accountant need not have a personal touch for his job in relation to the employees because for each expenditure or a receipt he needs a supporting voucher, that too an authenticated one. Whether this expenditure or receipt belongs to the CEO or the last grade employee of the organisation will not make any difference. But still, in the dry atmosphere we need to be soft to some extent. So let us take two cases in points. The first one is for a manufacturing industry and the other one is a hospitality industry.
In the case of a manufacturing industry there are different stages for production right from the time of receipt of raw materials. A good accountant will be evaluating and appreciate the cost aspect on each stage for which the minute details of expenditure has to be defined at each stage and this cost sheet has to be presented to the decision making authorities. So I think the accounting resume objectives can be:
- AN ACCOUNTANT WITH 7 YEARS EXPERIENCE WITH AN EYE FOR THE HIDDEN DETAILS or
- AN EXPERIENCED COST ACCOUNTANT CAPABLE OF SUGGESTING POSSIBLE METHODS OF COST REDUCTION ON A DAY TO DAY BASIS or
- A CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT WITH RIGHT MIXES OF EXPERIENCE FOR BEST FINANCIAL DECISIONS. Likewise.
Now for a hospitality industry it has to be slightly modified and the heading can be:
- AN EXPERIENCED ACCOUNTANT WHO CAN CONTROL THE PURSE IN A LUXURY ATMOSPHERE OF CUSTOMER RELATIONS. Or
- A FINACE MAN WHO CAN INVEST IN FIVE STAR STYLES WITH MINUTE DETAILS AND STILL KEEP THE RESORT IN TOP FINANCE. Likewise.
Ok now the experience part comes. As usual it has to be from the latest exposure first and then downwards till the first assignment in life. The period, the name of the organisation and the assignments held. While describing the assignments one has to be able to express in quantitative manner. It can be like “during the period I was evaluating the process expenditures and located avoidable expenditure to the tune of 1o million and made the corrective steps which resulted in the profit 100 million during the financial year” and “I have suggested the amalgamations of two departments which are having similar working methods which resulted in the further financial gain of 20 million during the same financial period. Likewise. In case of an entry level accounting resume, you can include any training or industry experience in this section.
Now the educational back ground. For the case of accountants I am of the view that up to the middle level of appointments it is advisable to express from the secondary school onwards. We expect that the accountants have to be more studious and meticulous in their approach. So a better track record of education may give an edge over others.
Then the interest, the interests are inborn so whatever one is in possession it has to be expressed as it is.
Finally the tips or special points, for a finance person the first and foremost is the academic excellence, how best a project has undertaken, what was the specialised subjects etc.
